There are
numerous versions of how the municipality got its name. The most
popular and acceptable one is about the “Lady and the Creek”.
Long
time ago, the people of the place often see a beautiful, mysterious
looking woman, taking a bath in one of the creeks. She was said to
be enchanted. Since the creek was a favorite place of the lady, it
was named “Sapa sa Dalaga”, meaning, the creek of the lady”.
As years passed by, the name was shortened to “Sapang Dalaga”
adopting it as the name of the place.
Sapang
Dalaga was once a barrio of the municipality of Baliangao, where in
the early 1930’s settlers from the Visayas e.g. Siquijor, Negros
Oriental, Cebu, Bohol and Negros Occidental reside.
It was later created into a municipality through the Executive Order
No. 216 of the then President of the Philippines, Carlos P. Garcia
on August 12, 1957. The municipality in that year covers five
barangays namely: Casul, Caluya, Bitibut, Guinabut and Sina-ad, with
Honorable Celso V. Velez, Sr., as the mayor.
Geographical Location
Located
in a very rugged terrain, Sapang Dalaga today is composed of 28
barangays. It occupies a total land area of 17,013 hectares with an
elevation of 700 to 900 feet above sea level.
Sapang
Dalaga is bounded on the east by Dioyo River and the municipality of
Calamba and Baliangao; on the south by the municipality of
Concepcion; on the west by the province of Zamboanga del Norte and
on the north by Mindanao sea.
Demographic Characteristics
The
1990 Census shows a total population of 17,945 of the municipality
of Sapang Dalaga where some of the San Agustin, Masubong, Lower
Bautista, Upper Bautista, Ventura and Capundag evacuated to nearby
municipalities due to the Army operation of the place.
